go to any cosmetics counter at a department store (if you do this you tell the woman that is helping you that you ARE going to buy the foundation, you just need to be matched. if you don't she may not help you to her full capability, i know this because i have worked at 3 cosmetics counters in the past 5 years). make sure she picks out 3 colors and tests them on your jawline and step into a well lit area to make sure which one is the correct match. make sure that you inform her what type of skin you have so she can pick the right formulation (perscriptives is a bit on the heavy side as far as coverage goes)
never pick a foundation color in the summer, your skin tone will change if you tan and your foundation will look funny come autumn. if you must do that, pick a shade that is closer to your color than darker (which most people do).
make sure your concealer is a bit lighter than your foundation but not too light, you want to make your eyes look bright.
it's best to use a translucent powder so you look more radiant than covered up.
apply the following in this order:
-foundation (with a foundation brush for more even coverage, if you use a sponge it will soak up more of the product creating wasted product)
-concealer (never under the foundation because when you apply the foundation the concealer will move on you)
-powder (with a brush and not a sponge or puff)
apply concealer only where you need it to avoid looking like you have caked on makeup.Proper way to apply concealer, foundation, and powder? And how to pick the right color?
Your best bet would be to head straight to the nearest department store and go to the beauty counters. You can get free consultations and samples of the lastest products. PLUS you can get the heads up on what shades/tones work best for your skin.
FYI: I LOVE the Prescriptives counter, because they can custom-blend your make-up, so there's no second-guessing whether or not it is the right shade.Proper way to apply concealer, foundation, and powder? And how to pick the right color?
Go to professional makeup counters, my favorite is Clinique. They will also show you how to apply it.
My crash course-
Concealor- Place smallish amount(youll be able to tell) under eyes, corners of your eyes( the part by your nose), down the center of your nose, and any other dark, red, area or any area that has acne, and blend in. Dont worry if you can still see it, becasue foundation will cover it.
Foundation- I use only a little at a time, and spread it out as far as i can and rub it in. I separate my face into sections when I do it, so I start with my cheeks and then to my forehead. I put a little over my eyelids as well.
Powder- Dip in large blush type brush, tap it several times on the container, and spread all over face in large circles. If you look to ghostly, you can take light Bronzer and brush it on the apples of your cheek, your jaw bone and your teples and blend or you can run over it gently with tissue.
First apply foundation, then concealer, and then apply powder to 'set' the make up.
As for color, you'd want to either experiment with that or go to a make up department to someone who can help you choose the clostest tone for you.
Tips for Choosing %26amp; Applying Foundation /Concealer /
Choosing Eye Makeup Colors

concealer only goes in areas that you need to cover like dark circles under eyes or maybe blemishes. Foundation you pat on to blend in or use a sponge. Don't drag your fingers because as time goes by and you rub wrong you can cause sagging and wrinkles. Powder you pat on also. Picking color generally speak you choose the color that matches your skin color. So use the inside of your arm on your wrist and then go about one level darker. This will generally get you very close to the color of your face. Don't use the color on the top of your arms like the back of your hand because it generally get tan more than your face.
when i went to but foundation at sephora..i wanted to try a new one (clinique) so the lady put the foundtion on my inner wrist...which was perfect!
